Valentine's Day

Holidays, big and small, have always been "my thing." Much to my husband's dismay sometimes, I make a big deal about them all. To me, this doesn't mean spending a ton of money or being insanely over the top. Of course I am a HUGE advocate for showing your loved ones that you care ALL YEAR LONG, especially after losing my mother and realizing just how precious time is with our friends and family.

I know a lot of people become sort of angry and annoyed with these holidays but it doesn't have to be this way. Easy for me to say, right? Since I have a husband and family but even if you don't have that, there are still ways you can make the most of it!  This year, I am the coach of about 30+ volunteers and I made them little goodie bags for valentine's day. Nothing super crazy but just a little something to show them that I am thinking of them and appreciate them! My daughter also made a valentine for her karate teacher, some family members, and some friends and sent them in the mail.  Even our mail carrier often gets a Valentine! We purchased live plants for our neighbors complete with a home made card from my 7 year old and hand delivered them. Today, while picking up donuts for my daughter's co-op party, I paid for the person's order behind me.

Why not celebrate every day, but especially days like this? You could make someone's DAY! And maybe someone will return that favor but that's not what it's all about. So here are some ideas for you to try today:

  • Write a letter to a loved one explaining what they mean to you. List the things you love about them most!
  • When you're in the drive thru for coffee today, pay for the person behind you!
  • Have your kids make a card and give it to your mail carrier!
  • send someone flowers!
  • do a good deed! Leave a nice note on someone's car, hand deliver a plant to your neighbor, send a nice text to your friends
  • bake a special treat and deliver it to the fire station
Maybe it's a little late to do things now but perhaps you can think ahead to the next "holiday".. or don't wait! Do it tomorrow, this weekend, or next week! You don't need a special reason to spread love and kindness.

Happy Valentine's Day, all! I hope you can make someone's day today
